Kevin Millwood and five Seattle relievers combined on a no-hitter, the third in franchise history, and the Mariners beat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 1-0, Friday night at Safeco Field in Seattle.
The no-hitter was the fourth in the majors this season, joining gems pitched by the Angels’ Jered Weaver, the Mets’ Johan Santana, and White Sox righthander Philip Humber, who threw a perfect game at Seattle in April.
But this was clearly the least conventional.
Millwood was cruising through six innings, giving up just one walk. But while warming up for the seventh he felt a twinge in his groin and was pulled from the game. Five relievers combined to finish the no-hitter, capped by Tom Wilhelmsen retiring Andre Ethier on a routine grounder to end it.
Yankees 9, Mets 1 - Robinson Cano homered twice and hit one of three straight long balls off an ineffective Johan Santana to lead the Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Hiroki Kuroda (5-6) gave up only a two-out double to Omar Quintanilla in the sixth in seven scoreless innings before leaving with a bruised left foot. Santana (3-3) was going on two extra days off after throwing a career-high 134 pitches last Friday, but served up a career-high four homers.
Rays 5, Marlins 1 - Matt Joyce homered, doubled and scored three times as visiting Tampa Bay escaped several jams to beat slumping Miami. Five Rays combined on a seven-hitter. Former Marlin Burke Badenhop (1-1) threw 1 2/3 shutout innings.
Phillies 9, Orioles 6 - Jim Thome doubled twice, legged out an infield hit, and got his first RBI of the season, and Shane Victorino homered and drove in five runs as Philadelphia emphatically ended a season-worst six-game losing streak by beating host Baltimore. Joe Blanton (5-6) threw 6 2/3 innings to end a skid in which he had been pounded while going 0-3 over four starts.
Pirates 4, Royals 2 - Erik Bedard pitched seven solid innings and Neil Walker had three hits to lead Pittsburgh over visiting Kansas City for its 10th victory in 13 games. Bedard (4-6) allowed two runs and five hits.
Tigers 6, Reds 5 - Wilson Valdez’s squeeze bunt with one out in the 10th inning scored Miguel Cairo and pushed Cincinnati past visiting Detroit. Brennan Boesch and Delmon Young homered for the Tigers in their first game at Great American Ball Park.
Indians 6, Cardinals 2 - Josh Tomlin (3-3) scattered eight hits over seven innings, Johnny Damon hit a two-run homer and Cleveland beat St. Louis, sending the hosts to their seventh loss in 10 games. . Former Indian Jake Westbrook (4-6) gave up four runs - three earned - and eight hits in six innings.
Astros 8, White Sox 3 - Jed Lowrie hit his 11th homer and Brett Wallace and Brian Bogusevic also connected and Houston got a strong road effort from their bullpen to beat Chicago, its third win in the last 13 games.
Braves 4, Blue Jays 3 - Jason Heyward opened the 10th with an infield single off Francisco Cordero (1-4), moved to second on pinch-hitter Jack Wilson’s sacrifice, and stole third, before scoring on catcher J.P. Arencibia’s throwing error as host Atlanta edged Toronto for its fifth straight win.
Twins 8, Cubs 7 - Josh Willingham’s RBI single in the 10th lifted Minnesota over visiting Chicago. The Twins trailed, 7-6, heading into the bottom of the ninth against Shawn Camp (2-3) when Justin Morneau hit a tying triple. The Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano homered twice and had three RBIs and Starlin Castro added a homer and triple.
Angels 7, Rockies 2 - Torii Hunter homered twice and drove in six runs, leading Los Angeles over Colorado in Denver. Mike Trout had three hits and scored three runs and Albert Pujols had an RBI double to back C.J. Wilson (7-4), who struck out nine in eight innings.
Brewers 9, Padres 5 - Corey Hart batted leadoff for the sixth time this season and hit a pair of a solo homers, leading host Milwaukee over woeful San Diego. Martin Maldonado connected for a three-run shot and pinch-hitter Taylor Green added a two-run homer.
Rangers 5, Giants 0 - Craig Gentry had a career-high five hits and drove in two runs, Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler each homered, and Matt Harrison pitched his third career shutout as Texas beat short-handed host San Francisco in a rematch of the 2010 World Series.
