1997 NATIONAL JOURNALISM AWARDS


Pulitzer Prize. Eileen McNamara, winner in Commentary category; Spotlight, finalist in Investigative Reporting for disability series; Michele McDonald, finalist in Feature Photography, for photos that ran in special hospice section.

American Society of Newspaper Editors Distinguished Writing Contest. First place to Eileen McNamara in Commentary category.

SAIS-Novartis Prize for Excellence in International Journalism won by Globe European correspondent Elizabeth Neuffer ($15,000).

Gerald Loeb Awards. Bruce D. Butterfield won the business reporting award for newspapers with circulation over 400,000.

Livingston Awards. Charles Sennott won the award for National Reporting.

Clarion Awards. Judy Foreman won Newspaper Article, Feature Story for special section for ``Choosing a Good Death.''

National Headliner Awards. Barry Chin, first place, Sports Photography; Eileen McNamara, second place, Local Column-Writing; Charles Sennott, second place, Investigative Reporting; Judy Foreman, third place, Spot Series Category.

James M. Aronson Award for Social Justice Journalism Awards. Charles Sennott, first prize for his special report, ``Arms for Profit.''

Associated Press Sports Editors Contest. For the eighth year in a row, the Boston Globe was named one of the top 10 sports sections in the country. The Globe scored in the daily, Sunday, and Special Sections competition. Six Globe writers were recognized. Named among top 10 were Dan Shaughnessy (columns), Michael Vega (news), Ron Borges (features), and Kevin Paul Dupont, Michael Madden, and Joe Concannon (enterprise).

Society of Newspaper Design Best of Newspaper Design competition. The Boston Globe was one of 16 newspapers named ``One of the World's Best-Designed Newspapers.'' The Globe's Editorial Design department won 32 awards in the competition, including three silver awards. Only the New York Times won more awards among American newspapers. The Globe winners: Silver Awards: ``Armed for Profit'' cover, Aldona Charlton and Sue Dawson, designers; Ben Bradlee, editor. National Association of Black Journalists Awards. Patricia Smith, first place, Commentary; Irene Sege, second place, Features.

Lowell Thomas Awards for Travel Journalism. Gold Medal, or first place, to Jerry Morris and Richard Carpenter for best travel section in newspapers over 500,000 circulation, sponsored by the Society of American Travel Writers; the Globe and the two editors also won The Connecticut Charter Oak Award, the 1997 Media Award from the Connecticut Tourism Industry Committee for the same section.

American Cancer Society's Sword of Hope Awards. Judy Foreman and Michelle McDonald won first place in the over-50,000 circulation for their supplement, ``Choosing a Good Death.'' Medical writer Richard Knox and the Boston Globe were given a first-ever Judges' Award for the 37-part series on the death of Globe medical writer Betsy Lehman and the situation involving her death and the problems of the Dana- Farber Cancer Institute. Derrick Z. Jackson won the Commentary division (in over 50,000) circulation for his series on smoking and the tobacco industry.

Award of Hope Prize at International Festival of Journalism in Perpignan, France, won by Stan Grossfeld, who donated $1,650 prize to UNICEF for land-mine programs in memory of Princess Diana.

American Association of University Professors Award of Excellence to Alice Dembner for series ``Learning Gap.''

American Association on Mental Retardation 1997 Media Award. Won by Don Aucoin of the Globe for a magazine article, ``An Ordinary Life.''

Basketball Hall of Fame's Curt Gowdy Media Award to Bob Ryan, Globe sports columnist. This is the highest honor for a journalist outside of induction.

American Society on Aging's 1997 Media Award for Long-term Achievement, to Judy Foreman, The Boston Globe.

Sunday Magazine Editors Association Awards. In Writing Category, first place, Essay, to freelance writer James Carroll ``A Chill in the Air''; second place, Profiles, to Don Aucoin for ``An Ordinary Life.'' In Headlines, two of the Top Ten appearing in Sunday magazines were won by Louise Kennedy for ``Creatures of the Web, and ``The Second Battle of Concord.'' In Photography, first place, Multiple Spreads, to Bill Greene for ``New England's Last Frontier''; honorable mention to Stan Grossfeld for ``Landmarks to the Lord''; and honorable mention, Single Photograph, to Lane Turner, a portrait of artist Maud Morgan. In Design, second place, Multiple-Page Design, to Keith Webb for ``12 Moments that Mattered.'' Catherine Aldrich won one of the Top Ten covers in Sunday magazines for ``The New Retirement.''

National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association named Dan Shaughnessy, The Boston Globe, Massachusetts Sportswriter of the Year for the seventh consecutive year.

Dan S. Blumenthal Memorial Contest, sponsored by the Professional Basketball Writers Association, First Place Awards to Dan Shaughnessy and Michael Hollley.

Pro Football Writers of America Contest. Ron Borges, first place, Commentary, about Bill Parcell's first press conference of Super Bowl week. His story on the New England Patriots' Terry Glenn received honorable mention in the features category.

World Press Photo. Barry Chin, The Boston Globe, Second Place, Sports Category, Olympic Games, Atlanta. Mark Wilson, The Boston Globe, Second Place, Nature and the Environment Category, Great Grey Owl, Massachusetts.

Pictures of the Year Competition. The Boston Globe staff won 11 awards. Bill Greene, third place, Newspaper of the Year category. He was cited for six awards in individual categories: second place, Sports Picture Story; one second and three awards of excellence in Issue Reporting Picture; an award of excellence in Sports Feature. Other awards of excellence winners were Barry Chin for his work at the Olympic games and for his overall sports portfolio; and Pat Greenhouse in Sports Feature. Photography staff members Geoff Forester, Peter Southwick, and Leanne Burden, and editorial designers Lucy Bartholomay and Aldona Charlton won a third prize in the Editing Division: Newspaper Special Section category for the Globe's report on hospice care entitled ``Choosing a Good Death.'' The photographs in the section were by former Globe photographer Michele McDonald.

Lowell Thomas Award for Travel Journalism. A gold medal (or first place) to the Boston Globe for best travel section in newspapers over 500,000 circulation. Award to Jerry Morris, Dick Carpenter and rest of Globe travel department. Globe also awarded The Connecticut Oak Award, the 1997 Media Award from the Connecticut Tourism Industry Committee for the same section.

National Health Information Awards. Gold Medal to Judy Foreman for ``Choosing a Good Death.''

Rado Lifetime Achievement Award to Bud Collins, Globe tennis writer and TV broadcaster.
