Charities struggle to meet demand as donations fall

Calls for help continue to rise as donations fall

As Massachusetts charities enter a fourth holiday season of sustained high need, they are focused on finding creative new ways to collect donations while grappling with a still-steady stream of families who suddenly need help. The Salvation Army bell-ringers are now accepting donations via smart phones. Other charities are trying to help corporations make a visible impact with more targeted donations. “People are reassessing financial donations in light of these changing times,’’ acknowledged Greater Boston Food Bank President and CEO Catherine D’Amato.
