Community colleges dispute call for overhaul

Presidents deny need for governing board

Community college presidents reacted with surprise yesterday to a Boston Foundation report recommending a structural and financial overhaul of their system. The report calls for a strong new governing board, and recommends aggressively measuring student performance and funding schools accordingly. It was released at a crowded forum yesterday where many of the presidents saw it for the first time. The presidents mostly agreed with its assessment of their challenges but disputed its call for central oversight, arguing that they are already collaborating to solve problems.
