Witness testifies about terror suspect’s influence

Alleges Mehanna backed 9/11 attacks

Daniel Maldonado, a former friend of Tarek Mehanna who trained with Al Qaeda and is serving 10 years for waging jihad in Somalia, testified today that Mehanna told him the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on America were legitimate. Mehanna said “the same thing has happened to Muslims throughout the world,” Maldonado testified today at Mehanna’s trial in federal court in Boston on charges of supporting terrorists. Mehanna, the young pharmacy school graduate from Sudbury, also said of the attacks that the “benefit outweighed the loss,” Maldonado said, testifying for the prosecution as part of a plea deal that, he said, kept him from serving life in prison without parole.
