John Oliver dives into President Trump’s promise to ‘Drain the Swamp’ on ‘Last Week Tonight’

Comedian John Oliver recalled President Donald Trump’s campaign pledge to “Drain the Swamp” during Sunday’s episode of “Last Week Tonight,” two years after Trump introduced the phrase in his 2016 campaign.

As Oliver sees it, the president hasn’t lived up to his promise.

“He has not drained the swamp one little bit,” the host declared.

To back up his assertion, Oliver focused on the Environmental Protection Agency and the Interior Department.

He pointed out that 2017 reporting from the Associated Press detailed that nearly half of the political appointees hired at the EPA under Trump have strong ties to industry.

Oliver also played a recording of Scott Angelle, an appointee in the Interior Department, who gave out his cell phone number at an oil industry conference and suggested attendees call him, rather than text, because texts would be part of the public record.
