Pop art: UNH exhibits collection of nearly 2,000 pop-up books

How a New Hampshire woman’s hobby grew into a museum collection

Carel Chapman has lived for years with things that jump out at her. Some of these things are ferocious animals and mythical creatures. Some are dinosaurs and horror-movie monsters. One is the late Michael Jackson, dangling his baby over a balcony. For two decades Chapman has collected pop-up books, those intricate feats of three-dimensional paper engineering that might seem like child’s play to some. But to the former Hewlett-Packard project manager, who has amassed a comprehensive collection of nearly 2000 pop-up books, they are serious works of art. Chapman recently donated the collection to her daughter’s alma mater, where selections are on display through December 16 at the UNH Museum.
