Boston, MA, 2007-05-11 -
Martin Baron, editor of The Boston Globe, announced today that Brian McGrory, a distinguished and popular metro columnist for the Globe, is being promoted to deputy managing editor/local news effective immediately.
Mr. McGrory will oversee coverage in the Globe's metro/region section and in the newspaper's regional editions. He will also assume responsibility for the Globe's health/science staff.
Mr. Baron stated, "In promoting Brian to this senior editing position, we are asking him to give up his platform as an eloquent columnist on our local pages. That is a huge sacrifice, for him and for us, but his eye for the great story, his exceptional skill at storytelling, and his deep knowledge of this region now can be applied to our entire local news operation."
Mr. McGrory, 45, has held several journalists' positions during his career at the Globe. He joined the Globe in 1989 as a reporter for one of the Globe's first regional sections. Since then he has covered the city of Boston as a metro reporter, Washington as a White House reporter, and the nation as a roving correspondent. He began his metro column in 1998 and in recognition of both his excellent reporting skills and his brilliant writing was named an associate editor.
Raised in the Boston neighborhood of Roslindale and Weymouth, MA, Mr. McGrory received a B.A. from Bates College in Maine, and worked early in his career at the New Haven Register and The Patriot Ledger.
