Department/Function:

 

City Desk (4 positions)

Definition:

 

Assist editors and reporters with the daily functions of the City Desk.

Key Duties:

 

  • Prepare morning report; research and update happenings overnight

  • Assist with research and data gathering; take feeds from reporters in the field 

  • Monitor police scanner

  • Report and write news briefs.

  • Interact with public: screen news tips; answer queries related to Metro section

  • Additional tasks as directed by supervisor, reporters, and editors

Core competencies:

 

Strong journalistic skills (documented with clips); strong verbal skills, interpersonal-team skills, detail oriented, and organized. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multitask when necessary.

Experience/knowledge/
skill/technical expertise required:

 

Newspaper or magazine writing experience.  Proficient in Microsoft Office.
